Beginner's guide
How to start a reading journal you'll actually keep
A reading journal is not a book review blog, a spreadsheet, or a performance. It's a private ledger where reading becomes memory. Here's how to start one in five steps — and, more importantly, how to keep it past the first fortnight.
- 1
Choose the smallest format that works
Most reading journals die of ambition — colour-coded spreads, ratings rubrics, a review per book. Start with two page types: one page per book, one dated line per reading session. You can grow it later; you can't recover a habit abandoned in week two.
- 2
Write the first entry tonight
Take the book on your nightstand. Write its title, the author, today's date, and one honest line about why you picked it up. That last line matters most — six months from now it's the detail that brings the whole season back.
- 3
Log pages, not feelings about pages
Each day you read, record three numbers: the date, the page you reached, and the minutes. Two minutes of writing, no more. Totals, pace and streaks should be arithmetic the journal does for you — never fields you maintain by hand.
- 4
Keep one piece of marginalia per session
A sentence you underlined, or a thought the page provoked — always attached to its page number. A quote with a page reference is findable and quotable; a quote without one is just atmosphere.
- 5
Review monthly, not daily
The journal pays off when you read it back. Once a month, skim your entries: what you finished, what you abandoned, which books kept appearing in your thoughts. That's where a reading journal stops being a log and starts being a mirror.
Paper or digital?
Paper is lovely and there's no shame in it — the template works identically in a ruled notebook. The honest difference is upkeep: a paper journal can't count your pages, chart your streak, or find every quote you tagged "grief" across three years. If you want the writing without the arithmetic, khoshra keeps the same two-page layout and derives everything else.
If you're starting on paper tonight, print the ready-made sheets: the printable reading log template is a free PDF with a book page, a session log, a monthly review and a year-in-books sheet.
