January 1970

A slow start that turned into a good day

Calm, a little tired behind the eyes. The good kind of tired — like the day used me rather than the other way around.

Mood spread · Steady

unhurried

A feelingQuietly pleased

A thoughtThe day used me well, for once.

Woke before the alarm and let the morning stay quiet for a while. Work was mostly one long stretch on the same problem, which is the kind of day I like — no switching, just one thing getting slowly less confusing. Walked to the market in the afternoon and cooked properly for the first time this week. Ended with an essay and the window open.

The day

  1. 07:10Woke up, coffee, no phone for the first hourrest
  2. 08:30Morning pages and one essay from The Quiet Hourslearning
  3. 09:30Deep work block — finished the migration draftwork
  4. 13:00Lunch outside, called Mapeople
  5. 16:00Walk to the market, 40 minutesbody
  6. 19:30Cooked dal and rice, cleaned the kitchenhome
  7. 22:00Reading in bedrest

Wins

  • Finished the draft I'd been avoiding
  • Cooked instead of ordering

Hard parts

  • Lost an hour to email after lunch

Grateful for

  • The long light at 6pm
  • Ma sounded happy

What I want to do

Patience is only attention that refuses to hurry.

December 1969

Too many small things

Scattered. I could feel myself reaching for my phone every few minutes, which is usually the tell that I'm avoiding something.

Mood spread · Restless

static

A feelingBuzzing, unfocused

A thoughtI keep trading sleep for a sense of the day.

One of those days made entirely of fragments — calls, replies, errands. Nothing went wrong, but nothing added up either. Stayed up too late reading Dune to get back some of the day for myself, which is a bad trade I keep making.

The day

  1. MorningThree back-to-back callswork
  2. AfternoonBank, pharmacy, post officeadmin
  3. EveningDinner with Rpeople
  4. Late41 pages of Dunerest

Wins

  • Cleared the admin pile I'd been dragging for two weeks

Hard parts

  • No focused work at all
  • Slept at 1am

Grateful for

  • R paid for dinner and didn't make it a thing

Rain, a train, and a short chapter

Quiet and a bit sentimental. Grief writing on a commute is a strange choice but it landed softly.

Mood spread · Tender

window-seat

A feelingSoft around the edges

A thoughtSome days are just for passing through.

Travelled most of the day. Trains are the only place I read properly anymore. Got in late, didn't cook, went straight to bed — but the day felt gentle rather than wasted.

The day

  1. 10:00Train, window seat, one chapterrest
  2. 15:00Site visit and noteswork
  3. 21:00Home, toast, bedhome

Wins

  • Read on a workday

Hard parts

  • Skipped both proper meals

Grateful for

  • Rain on the window the whole way

What I want to do

Grief is just love with nowhere to go.
